Independent testing confirms FSI North America® DAT® Series canopy is PFAS-free

Third-party laboratory results show no detectable PFAS or total fluorine in the FSI Blue® outer canopy, reinforcing the material's REACH and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 compliance and lowering risk for patients, responders, and the environment

SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio, May 30, 2026. FSI North America® (FSI®), a division of Fire Safety International, Inc., today announced that independent laboratory testing has confirmed the FSI Blue® outer canopy material used on its DAT® Series shelters and gross decontamination shower systems contains no detectable per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the class of synthetic compounds commonly known as "forever chemicals."

Testing was performed by FITI Testing & Research Institute, an independent textile testing laboratory. Using test methods EN 17681-1:2025 and EN 14582:2016, FITI screened the 100% nylon heavy twill canopy fabric for the PFAS compounds most scrutinized by regulators worldwide, including PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, and PFHxA. Every targeted substance returned a result below the laboratory's detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg. A separate total fluorine screen returned no detection below a 30 mg/kg limit, corroborating the absence of fluorinated chemistry in the material.

The results add to the canopy's existing REACH and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 compliance documentation, giving agencies and procurement officers independent confirmation that the fabric at the core of FSI's decontamination and shelter systems is free of the chemistry now being restricted across the United States and Europe.

"Decontamination equipment exists to take hazards away from people, not introduce new ones," said Graham Conron, FSI North America®. "Everyone who comes into contact with our products, the patients being decontaminated, the first responders and medical personnel running the line, and the communities downstream of the runoff, deserves a system that does not carry forever chemicals into the picture. Confirming our canopy is PFAS-free, on top of its REACH and OEKO-TEX compliance, is part of how we hold that standard for the people who depend on this equipment."

PFAS are persistent in both the human body and the environment, where they accumulate in water, soil, and blood and have been linked to a range of health and ecological concerns. That persistence is a particular issue for decontamination operations, where large volumes of water move across the equipment and into the ground, storm drains, and watersheds. A canopy that is free of PFAS reduces the risk of introducing forever chemicals during deployment, washdown, and end-of-life disposal, protecting the people being decontaminated, the teams operating the system, and the environment that receives the water.

The FSI Blue® outer canopy is the standard exterior material used across the full DAT® Series line, which spans single- and multi-stage portable decontamination showers, rapid-deploy pneumatic shelters, surge-capacity field hospitals, and Mass Casualty decon systems used by hazmat teams, fire departments, military units, and EMS organizations.
